Short answer: Use BWP (boiling water proof) plywood for the base cabinets, especially the sink unit and anything near the dishwasher or water purifier. BWR (boiling water resistant) or BWP plywood works for wall cabinets and tall units. Use 18 mm sheets for the cabinet boxes and shelves, and avoid MR plywood, MDF and ordinary particle board anywhere below the counter. Check that every sheet carries the ISI mark and the grade you were quoted.
Kitchens in Indian homes see daily wiping, steam from cooking and the occasional leak under the sink. The board inside the cabinets decides whether they still close properly in ten years. Here is what the grades mean, which one goes where, and how to check what your carpenter or interior company actually uses.
Plywood grades compared
| Grade | Full name | Indian standard | Water resistance | Use in a kitchen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MR | Moisture resistant | IS 303 | Humidity only; swells if it gets wet | Not below the counter; dry storage only |
| BWR | Boiling water resistant | IS 303 | Handles humidity and occasional splashes | Wall cabinets, tall units, shutters |
| BWP | Boiling water proof | IS 303 (BWP grade) | Designed for wet conditions | Base cabinets, sink unit, appliance units |
| Marine | Marine plywood | IS 710 | Waterproof, with a stronger bond and stricter quality | Sink unit, or the whole kitchen if budget allows |
MR, BWR and BWP are grades of general-purpose plywood under IS 303. Marine plywood is made to a separate standard, IS 710, for boat building, with a higher bonding strength and tighter limits on core quality.
BWP vs BWR: which is better for a kitchen?
BWP is better wherever the cabinet can get wet. BWR resists humidity and the odd splash, but standing water from a leaking sink trap will eventually make it swell and delaminate. BWP is made to survive that.
Above the counter, the difference matters much less. Wall cabinets and tall units stay dry, so BWR is a sensible way to save money there. Many people still use BWP throughout so the kitchen is one specification and nothing gets mixed up on site.
IS 303 vs IS 710: what "710" on your quote means
For years, many quotes used "710" to mean waterproof plywood, because IS 303 only covered MR and BWR. An amendment by the Bureau of Indian Standards, reported in 2024, added a BWP grade to IS 303, so there are now two kinds of waterproof plywood on the market:
- BWP grade to IS 303: waterproof plywood for interiors, including kitchens and bathroom vanities.
- Marine plywood to IS 710: a stronger, stricter specification originally meant for boats. It costs more.
Both are suitable for kitchen base units. If a quote says "710", ask whether it means IS 710 marine plywood or a brand's product name, and ask to see the standard printed on the sheet.
Which board for which part of the kitchen
| Part | Recommended board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Base cabinet boxes (carcass) | BWP plywood | 18 mm |
| Sink unit | BWP or marine plywood, or a waterproof WPC/PVC board | 18 mm |
| Wall cabinets and tall units | BWR or BWP plywood | 18 mm |
| Shelves | Same grade as the cabinet | 18 mm |
| Shutters (doors) | BWR or BWP plywood, or HDHMR | 12–18 mm (18 mm for tall or wide shutters) |
| Back panels and drawer bottoms | BWR or BWP plywood | 6–9 mm |
Thinner carcass panels save a little money but hold hinge and drawer-channel screws less firmly. On long shelves, 18 mm also resists sagging under heavy steel utensils.
Plywood vs HDHMR vs WPC vs MDF
| Material | Strengths | Weaknesses | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| BWP plywood | Strong, holds screws well, handles water | Costs more than boards; quality varies by brand | Carcass, especially base units |
| HDHMR board | Smooth, flat and stable; good moisture resistance; takes finishes well | Heavier; edges must be sealed; not for standing water | Shutters, wall units |
| WPC / PVC board | Fully waterproof and termite-proof | Less rigid; can sag on long spans; screws hold less firmly | Sink base, under-sink units |
| MDF | Very smooth for paint and PU finishes | Swells badly if wet | Dry shutters with painted finishes only |
| Particle board | Cheapest | Weak screw holding; swells when wet | Not recommended in kitchens |
A common, sensible combination is BWP plywood for the carcass, a WPC or BWP sink base, and plywood or HDHMR shutters finished in laminate, acrylic or PU.
How to check you got the plywood you paid for
- ISI mark: each sheet should show the ISI mark, the standard (IS 303 or IS 710), the grade (BWP, BWR or MR) and the licence number.
- Stamp and thickness: check the brand and grade stamp on the face and measure the thickness. An "18 mm" sheet should be close to 18 mm.
- Edges: look at a cut edge. The layers should be tight, with no large gaps or overlaps in the core.
- Paperwork: ask for the grade, brand and thickness of each part in your quote and on the supplier's invoice.
- On site: ask to see the sheets before they are cut. Once laminated, the grade can't be seen.
What else keeps water out of kitchen cabinets
Even BWP plywood lasts longer with good detailing:
- Edge banding on every exposed edge, including the bottom edges that touch wet floors.
- A sink-unit tray or aluminium liner under the sink to catch leaks.
- A raised plinth of PVC, aluminium or BWP behind a skirting, so floor mopping doesn't soak the carcass.
- Silicone sealing around the sink and where the counter meets the wall.
- Access to pipes so a leak can be spotted and fixed before it damages the cabinet.
What does a modular kitchen cost in Bengaluru?
In 2026, a modular kitchen of about 8 to 12 running feet in Bengaluru usually costs ₹1.5 to ₹2.5 lakh with laminate finishes and standard hardware, and ₹2.5 to ₹4.5 lakh with acrylic or PU finishes, quartz counters and premium hardware. The plywood grade is only one part of that cost; finishes, counters and hardware make most of the difference between the two price bands. Our guide to modular kitchen designs for small Indian homes covers layouts and storage.
How Stylfixx builds modular kitchens
Stylfixx designs and builds modular kitchens as part of our interiors work in Bengaluru, from Hennur, Kalyan Nagar and HRBR Layout to Hebbal and Frazer Town. You see the kitchen in 2D and 3D before anything is made. We use BWP plywood in wet areas and write the grade, brand and thickness of each part into your itemised quote, along with the warranty terms for workmanship and hardware. Because we also renovate, we can move plumbing, change the flooring tiles or redo the electrical points in the same project.

FAQs
Is marine plywood necessary for the whole kitchen?
No. Marine plywood (IS 710) is the strongest option, but BWP-grade plywood to IS 303 is designed for wet interior use and is enough for most kitchens. Some homeowners use marine plywood for the sink unit only.
Can MR plywood be used anywhere in the kitchen?
Only in fully dry places away from the sink and hob, such as a separate pantry or crockery unit. For anything below the counter, MR plywood is a false saving.
Does plywood need termite protection?
Yes, in most Indian cities. Choose plywood that the maker states is treated against termites and borers, and make sure the walls and floor near the kitchen are free of termites before installation.
Which plywood brand is best for a kitchen?
Several large Indian makers sell BWP and marine plywood. Rather than choosing by brand alone, check the ISI mark, the standard and grade printed on the sheet, the thickness and the written warranty for the product.
How long does a plywood modular kitchen last?
A kitchen built with BWP plywood, sealed edges and good hardware can last for many years. Hinges and drawer channels usually wear out first and can be replaced without rebuilding the cabinets.
